And yet, another one I'd like to see. Herb and Dorothy is a documentary film which tells the extraordinary story of Herb, a postal clerk, and Dorothy, a librarian - an ordinary couple of modest means who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history.
This short film, called “Mankind Is No Island” was shot completely on a cellphone by Jason van Genderen, and won top prize at the world’s largest short-film festival, Tropfest. [via tiny gigantic]
Typeface focuses on a rural Midwestern museum and print shop where
international artists meet retired craftsmen and together navigate the
convergence of modern design and traditional technique.
24-year-old New Orleans native, Kimberly Roberts, purchased a Sony Handycam off the street for twenty bucks a week before Katrina. Her goal was to document what she witnessed daily in her Ninth Ward neighborhood — crime, drugs, murder. She and her husband, Scott, weren't able to escape the storm and the subject matter for her cause changed entirely.
The film follows the Robertses through the storm and their struggle to recover after.
The film is a feature-length documentary and is produced by Brooklyn-based filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (who also produced Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine) and has won the Grand Jury Prize for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. Opens in New York and L.A. on August 22 with a nationwide release to follow.
