Shiny new site up over at the Heads of State

I haven't seen or heard from Dusty much in our little cybergroup but I was excited to see that he and partner Jason over at the Heads of State have a new site up. I'm loving the McKinsey Quarterly illustrations.

Lost in Emoticons

If you're looking to pass some quality time, then I guarantee you'll have lots of fun over at Yvonne Cheng's project, Lost in Emoticons. Lost in Emoticons is an ongoing collection of  instant message conversations between Yvonne (an LSU design grad working in NYC) and her Chinese mother, who sometimes has a difficult time communicating with her due to their language barrier.  So glad that we've been introduced and that I have discovered a new daily reading addiction o.O !

 

Saying goodbye to Polaroid

Here's a couple of the many Polaroid shows/parties coming up. First off, the Chicago Art Department is showcasing Death + Extinction, a collaboration between New York and Chicago artists memorializing the soon-to-be-departed medium of Polaroid film.

Secondly, the Country Club is doing their own farewell to the beloved medium on August 15, 2008. Click here for more info.

Sense the World logo re-design

Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, I was contacted by an old friend from Colorado who has just recently, alongside his wife and good friend, started an amazing non-profit organization, Sense the World. The concept is both brilliant, yet simple by distributing donated goods (associated with the below "senses" ) to the poorest regions of the world.

"Hearing" - hearing aids
"Sight" - eyeglasses
"Taste"  - toothbrushes, toothpaste & vitamins
"Smell" - shampoo and soap
"Touch" - latex gloves, first aid kits and sewing kits

I was asked to take a look at their current logo for a re-design that could be used to visually represent what Sense the World stands for. Their main request was having a human form built from the symbols that represent the 5 above senses and my primary goal/challenge was to not have the use of too many elements and colors distract from the primary message/name of the organization.

Germany looooves Obama

Via NPR this morning: Barack Obama is expected to be received with the kind of religious fervor usually reserved for the Pope when he arrives in Germany on Thursday. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is seen by most Germans as more than a visiting politician. He's considered a potential savior of something dear to their hearts: Germany's close relationship with America. Listen to the full story here.

First Things First

So great seeing this post on JoyEngine's site today.  As a designer, the First Things First Manifesto is something that I definitely think of often and many times struggle with of late. But that's a post for another time. In the meantime, how about a refresher?

Hot 8 Brass Band on Boing Boing this morning

This was something special to wake up to this morning! Some of you were aware (if not, full on helping me out) organize a benefit party for Gabby's documentary See What I'm Saying which was supposed to take place in September of 2005. Then that 'lil wind-storm hit us and the benefit party was no longer. During that time, I was in the middle of talking with my (and I think it's safe to say, most of yours) favorite brass bands, the Hot 8 to headline the party. Sadly, like all things during that time, it didn't happen.
