DGTL WTF: An Evening with Corpus NYC

Picture 14

If you're in the New Orleans area tomorrow night then I urge you (yes, urge!) to attend and evening with CorpusNYC at Loyola's Monroe Library from 5-7pm.

The world is undergoing a dramatic transformation with each generation finding itself increasingly immersed in a hyper-digital society. Media and information abound to the point of oversaturation, and personal electronic devices, webready or not, are becoming the primary way in which people interface with the world around them. Young designers are coming of age in this context - in what is arguably a completely new world - and are faced with its many obstacles.

Corpus, a New York-based design collective, is meeting some of today’s challenges with innovative concepts and designs. Whether it’s creating apps for social-networking sites, widgets for mobile devices, or dynamic interactive websites, Corpus is part of an emerging reality in which fluid structures and self-run organizations are becoming ever more pervasive.

Loyola Students & Members: FREE

Non-Members: $5

Your morning coffee just got a little better with Poketo mugs!

Picture 12

Poketo just launched a fun series of mugs by four great artists: Leah Chun (Los Angeles), Luke Ramsey (Canada), Peskimo (U.K.), and Silvia Portella (Spain). I love them all but I think the above may be my favorite.

Blippo bold (and why America is graphically eff'd)

So, I'm sitting here going through twitter tonight when I see an intriguing tweet posted by Typophile which simply reads: "Blippo bold? Why America is graphically eff'd. (Caution strong language.)" So, I click on the video and I was simply wowed, mainly because of my own recent frustrations built around this topic.

Ok, so, this is Aaron Draplin, of Draplin Design Co. and this is a small clip from a new mini-documentary that he and Jess Gibson are working on together. I can't wait to see the entire finished piece. Enjoy.

Prospect.1 New Orleans

Picture 3

Wow, it feels like only a week or two ago when we were celebrating the opening weekend of the biggest biennial in U.S. history, right here in New Orleans. But now it's winding down and it's time to say good-bye. It was a great experience to witness extraordinary art by international, national and local artists, more specifically my friends and colleagues who graced the galleries with their talents.

I've read many articles in regards to the event but came across this write-up in Frieze Magazine this morning which I really enjoyed and thought important to share with you all. [article via Abitare]

And now, we say good-bye in a way we know best — jazz funeral style on Sunday, January 18th.

The Little Friends of Printmaking: "Tough Luck"

Picture 33

Ah, how I love their work. Are you in Chicago? Do you love Milwaukee's husband and wife duo The Little Friends of  Printmaking? Well, since Threadless is now very, very far from me, do me a huge favor and head over there tomorrow night for a little show called Tough Luck and lots of screenprinted shirts! (I'll send you some cash if you go and are willing to pick me up something FUN!)

Also, just an early heads up — the Little Friends will be just one of many artists showcased in Faythe Levine's highly anticipated documentary, Handmade Nation.

Merry Christmas!

I slacked this year and didn't get my holiday cards out in time. So, I  decided that in the spirit of all things green this year, I would make you all an animated.gif-card instead!

This year has been full of surprises and has been somewhat of a little roller coaster for many of us. I didn't compile a trillion song best of mix like years past; instead, I decided I would do a much simpler list in hopes for much simpler times ahead. You're about to witness a compulsive list maker force herself to chose 1 favorite thing in each category. So, here is my best shot (and note how brief the category list is!):

1. Best album of the year: Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago. There are some friends out there that would argue  on the technicality of this release (self-released in 2007, official in 2008) but, I didn't discover it until this year so it officially becomes my favorite album of the year. Many days were spent curled up with a good book with this album on repeat and those days were the best.

2. Best book read this year: What is the What by Dave Eggers. Wow, what an amazing (and important) book. The superb writing pared with this triumphant story makes What is the What a rare work of art that immediately touches the world beyond the page.

3. Happiest day of the year: November 4th.

4. Toughest decision to make: Leaving Chicago to move back to New Orleans.

That wasn't so bad! I am so grateful for all of you who help make life that much more fun and interesting. Here's to, what I feel to be, an amazing 2009!

Welcome!
